2008-2009 Stipends for All Programs

Residents are also eligible for the Akron General match portion of our 401K after completing one full year of service of at least 1,000 hours and attaining 21 years of age. The match is immediately vested. Residents are also able to participate prior to their year anniversary. The benefits to both are deferring federal and state income taxes and saving for retirement.

Relocation Services
PGY I residents can receive up to $1,000 in a relocation loan repayable through payroll deduction over the first year of the residency. We also provide: a community tour, escorted viewing of apartments and homes to rent or buy, lease assistance, spouse employment counseling and assistance, a school match and daycare referrals/viewing.

Vacation & Meetings
Three weeks of vacation are provided at each level of training. In addition conference time is allowed as approved by the program director.

Educational Allowance
Residents receive $800 in educational allowances during their first and second years of training and $1,100 each following year. This allowance can be used for texts, seminars, meetings or other approved educational materials. Additional allowances for mandatory educational experiences and tuition reimbursement for advanced coursework or degrees is also available.

Board Review Course
All senior residents are eligible for up to $1,600 for an approved board review course.

Exercise Allowance
Up to $300 per year is payable to each resident for exercise expenses such as a club membership. Residents may also take advantage of the employee work-out facility located on campus for the reasonable rate of $2.50 per pay.

Health Insurance
Residents may choose from several health plans, with varied options suited to individual and family health needs. Healthcare insurance premiums are covered by Akron General Medical Center. Co-pays are the responsibility of the resident.

Dental Insurance
Free dental insurance is available to all residents who enroll in one of our hospitalization plans.

Vision Care
Residents receive discounts on contacts, frames and lenses at the Akron General Vision Center for residents and their dependents, and a vision exam is included as part of most medical plans.

Counseling Support Services
Confidential, 100% pre-approved coverage for house officers.

Life Insurance
Akron General Medical Center offers term life insurance in the amount of your annual pay, limited to $50,000. More term life coverage is optional, payable by the resident, up to five times their annual pay. Whole life policies are also available through Liberty Mutual. These are payable through payroll deduction and can be continued upon residency program completion.

Long Term Disability
We provide an individual policy of $1,000 per-month benefit. Additional coverage is available for purchase at competitive rates.

Malpractice Insurance
All residents are indemnified for their education activities as an approved component of their post-graduate programs.

Hobart Loan
The Akron General Development Foundation offers interest-free loans to first year residents for personal emergencies and educational needs. First year residents can borrow up to $1,000 from the fund, repayable through payroll deduction over the first year of the residency. All residents are offered the opportunity to borrow from this fund at a reasonable interest rate.

On-Call Quarters, Meals & Uniforms
Our on-call quarters are stocked daily with sandwiches, milk, soda, juice and fruit. We also offer a lounge area, which includes a television and computer terminals for accessing patient and laboratory information. Residents receive free meals in the cafeteria when on duty. We offer free meals for residents' spouses and/or children on weekends and holidays. We furnish residents with new uniforms, including free, on-site laundry services.

House Staff Information
House staff are elected annually to serve on the House Officers' Association. Elected positions include president, vice president and treasurer, plus participation on the following committees: Ethics, Research, Pharmacy, Utilization Review, Medical Records and Infection Control. This organized representation ensures unity among the house staff as well as the input of residents' views in hospital policy making. We sponsor a welcome party in July to honor our newest house staff members, along with a postgraduate weekend in June to honor graduating residents. Residents are also invited to attend annual spring, fall and holiday parties.
